The companies bet on cardboard containers

The packaging industry will have to adapt, as Packfeeder adapts to unscrambling cardboard containers

Until now the packaging industry revolved around plastic, but every time there are more variety of materials to use for all kinds of containers and bottles. In large part, this change emerges from that the sustainability and environment have turned into everybody’s concern. The consumers demand products with low environmental impact and the brands are listening to them.

One of the materials which are being more and more used is cardboard and many companies have already bet on it. Besides, is getting introduced in unexpected sectors that traditionally didn’t work with this format.

New cardboard applications

Clear evidence of the increasing usage of cardboard is that every time more products update and redesign their “traditional” packaging for being able to use it. In the market, the options have increased even for the most unexpected articles.

In the cosmetics sector, there are some important novelties, like this new line of tubes from L’Oréal, a first step to achieve their goal of all their products being recyclable, rechargeable or compostable by 2025. But, there’s more, because are being found cardboard options for nearly everything: shampoos, lipsticks, deodorants, conditioners, toothpastes, etc.

A case showing that this trend is going further is bottled water. It went popular with the famous Boxed Water is Better but now there’re a lot of alternatives in the market such as Bezoya, Agua Blue Whale, Only Water… And maybe the beer is moving in the same direction, Carlsberg has already introduced its new cardboard bottle.

Something similar is also happening with the liquid laundry detergent, and there are already some brands in the market commercializing it like Seventh Generation or SOUJI. This last one uses 70% less plastic than common bottles, also helps to recycle used oil turning it into soap.

And, although there is an endless number of novelties, we finish with a current project in which we have participated unscrambling the cardboard containers. The Laboratoires Juva Santé, an important company dedicated, between others, to the pharmaceutical sector, has bet on cardboard containers to commercialize pills or tablets.

Adapt to the new demands

Any change inside the packaging world affects all the companies in the industry, independently of the production stage they specialize in. All this means that we have to adapt constantly to the new requirements.

Unscrambling cardboard containers

Packfeeder always joins the change and adapts to the new challenges. A modification, even if is small, in the shape or the material, entails a reconditioning of our equipments. That’s why we are glad to say that we do not have any problem with this type of container.

Unscrambling cardboard containers is not a difficulty for the Packfeeder system even though as they are more fragile, they usually need more delicate treatment. Otherwise, the procedure is very similar to the one followed for plastic.

The fact of Packfeeder being able to unscramble cardboard and plastic containers with the same machine was decisive for our choice, besides the saving of costs and space that this means.Emmanuel Grelin, Laboratoires Juva Santé

Our equipments are designed to offer the maximum care of the bottles, that’s why they meet perfectly the requests of unscrambling cardboard containers. Both mechanical bottle unscramblers and robotic bottle unscramblers are prepared for that. This possibility of combining two materials in the same sorter means a big advantage.

Back to the Juva Santé laboratories, to whom the following video belongs to. Precisely our main job was to provide this kind of bottle sorter, useful for cardboard and plastic at the same time. The final solution was an Excel 100 mechanical unscrambler from the in-Line range.  As Emmanuel Grelin, maintenance coordinator said: being able to use the same machine for formats of different materials reduces production costs, thanks to the money saved from having a machine less and thanks to the space that is not occupied.

But, why?

As previously said, environmental awareness has had a big influence on this trend. But, there are many more reasons to consider, its peak is not because is more sustainable than other materials, it has many other advantages.

Before anything else, why is it more respectful than other materials?

To start, the cardboard has a 100% natural origin, coming from the wood of cultivated forests. Also, the greater part of the current production, 85%, comes from recycled materials. All this transforms it into sustainable since is biodegradable and renewable. And if it were not enough, when ends its life cycle, meaning it can’t be recycled again, it simply decomposes and turns into organic matter.

Other reasons why cardboard is better:

First of all, highlight that probably is one of the most economic options in the majority of cases. Its production cost is low, although it will always depend on the desired features. And also, its transport cost uses to be lower because of its small weight and a lot of times it can even be folded taking up less space. This is one of the main reasons why it is used worldwide for containers and packaging.

It is light and resistant, so it can support a high weight. Stands out the corrugated cardboard that apart from being light and resistant it also protects, with a function similar to the bubble wrap.

Besides the previous, that affects any type and use of cardboard, some advantages help it to highlight inside the packaging industry. The most important are: easy printing, although some types of cardboard don’t allow it, in general, all do.  Its manipulation: can be worked, stuck, cut, folded and stack very easily. The fact that it can be folded facilitates and reduces the transport cost. Its opacity helps it to be a perfect material especially for containers of the food sector or for products sensitive to light.

The combination of all these factors and others is what makes it a so versatile material. Its properties allow resistant structures with many options, suitable for nearly all kind of applications and designs. That’s why we shouldn’t be surprised about being used more and more, especially for packaging considering that this industry presents all the features to benefit from it.

Finally, say that Packfeeder is always opened to change and ready for what is coming. Also, we want to take the opportunity to encourage companies to go for more sustainable alternatives and to listen to the new demands of the consumers, especially if they are in favor of the environment.
